Sony is such a poor software maker. First off, they did not have software to edit the AVCHD stuff that comes out of their HD Camcorders. I heard that Sony Vegas now supports AVCHD editing. Based on my experience with all the crap I got from Sony’s software division, I would not pay money to buy it. How many of you had bad experience with bundled software that comes with Sony Vaio laptops or Sony computers? I had many and that is how started installingclean Windows XP on all my computers. All outsourced crap I think.

This is another one. The tools come with Sony HDR-SR1 can convert AVCHD to mpg files. The problem is, it won’t play in Windows Media player. There is a ton of mpg files on my hard drive from other tools, mostly converted from AVI files and they play in WMP just fine. After almost 6 months of having this camcorder, I am still frustrated.

-_- I bought one too, and thought it was was the greatest thing in the world until I tried to convert it to mpeg so I could burn it onto DVDs and post it on the internet.

Is there ANY way to work with the files??? I mean, not just play it on MY computer, but also have the files compatible with media players on OTHER computers as well.

We bought a sony camcorder because we were told it was, “The best” available, thinking that it would not be obsolete anytime soon. Unfortunately, I have had the thing for over a year and still cannot make decent home movies, or training films with it because of the software that came with it. I had to buy a sony AVCHD player $400, Plus the camcorder, $~1200, now they tell me that I have to buy software of over $400 in order to use this equipment. Everything is also overly complicated and difficult to use. Screw you Sony.

There is a bit of a good news for you. Microsoft went ahead and implemented support for AVCHD in Windows 7. It played the AVCHD content from my Sony HD Camcorder better than the Sony software.

You have many choices these days. None perfect but usable. I purchased corel video studio pro x2 when it was on sale. It does a good job of converting to other formats. I am pretty sure it requires a fast CPU and a lot of RAM.

Another good news is that Windows 7 natively plays the output from this camcorder. You can even connect the camcorder to a Windows 7 PC and play directly from Windows Media player.
