Windows 7 Beta: Shutdown problem

This is weird. Definitely something to do with my system and the ACPI driver. When I shutdown Windows 7, it goes down and I can hear pretty much everything turning off. But some fan keeps running. When I clicked the power button, nothing happens and then when I press the reset button, the system starts. In my BIOS I have enabled ACPI 2.0 and have set some settings for the fan. Windows is not able to detect those settings I guess.

Here is what I sent using feedback tool.

When I press shutdown, the system doesn’t go down fully. Hard drive, monitor etc are off but I can hear one fan running loud. If I press the power button, nothing seems to be happening (wait for few hours before pressing the power button. In my case the system was in that state over night.) but when I press the reset button, system starts or restarts.

My PC uses ASUS motherboard P5B-E and BIOS version 1802. I have enabled ACPI 2.0 and have set CPU and motherboard fans to silent mode. I don’t think I have a fan controller connection to the power supply.

Update: Disabling Hybrid Sleep and all other power management stuff didn’t help. What is system cooling policy?

    I’ve been looking for a solution for several weeks !
    Such a pain to power off the PC with the power button.

    My home P5B has no problem with shutting down. However Hibernate is not working properly. It saves what needed to be saved, turns fan\ligts off, then immediately turns on, and restores my previous screen.
    I just found lemon75′s post and haven’t try that solution. Good if helps.

    Here’s the solution!

    Click “Start”, on “Computer” click right mouse button and select “Properties”, click “Device Manager”, select “IEEE 1394 Bus Host Controllers” group, only contains one device called “VIA 1394 OHCI Compilant Host COntroller” on that click right mouse button and select “Properties”, select “Power Management” tab, and finally check the “Allow the computer to tur off this device to save power” box!
    That’s all folks. After that the computer power down normally every time.

      Since I´m a curious person I would be really satisfied if you could explain WHY this kept the computer from shutting down? :)

      Also: is there any solution for sleep and hibernate problem?

        I wish I knew the answer to that. Driver not responding to an OS call to shutdown and the OS waiting on it indefinitely?
        I haven’t checked the sleep and hibernate recently. Had been busy with a Linux server.

    Same problem whith my P5B-E. Windows RC1 won’t shutdown and there is no driver for Windows7

    Hi!
    Again, same problem with ASUS P5B-E motherboard. Funny but the very first start of Win7 and shutdown the system is off perfectly! But never again… That’s very strange. And looks like only the 64bit version is causing this problem. Some users reporting the 32bit os is working perfectly. On ASUS support forums some guy received a response from ASUS to this problem:

    “At this time we cannot offer support or troubleshooting help for Windows 7, and we will not have drivers available until the software is finalized (ie; no longer in Beta status, as a driver/app for one build often won’t work correctly with others, necessitating a driver testing for each prerelease build and that isn’t feasible). You will either need to contact Microsoft for troubleshooting/driver assistance or install a supported OS on the board in order for us to be able to assist you with any problems you may have.”

    Same goes for Asus P5KC, but it started after I installed motherboard drivers from manufacturers cd…I’l try to remove them, see what happens.

      I didn’t have any issue with Vista Ultimate (RTM) either. But had issue with Vista beta. Don’t remember if it was this same motherboard or another ASUS motherboard I have.

    Same here,

    did experience the same problems with windows 7 (7077) and now with windows 7 rc.
    MB is ASUS P5B-MX. the first shut down is without any problems, but after windows installed updates, the troubles begin. I also had the idea is is related to ACPI. tried to disable and enable options, same goes for ACPI APIC option.

    I didn’t try the suspend mode, will try this one.

    I have the exact same problem as earlier mentioned. The question is if the problem is microsoft´s or asus´s…

    From one point of view, all the problems came up when installing W7, but from another it seems like a lot of us that is having trouble is using a ASUS MB.

      Sorry about keeping the comment for approval. I keep getting too many spam and the web site is hosted at home.

      If you remember, Vista had a lot of issues with graphics. It was later found that lot of it was caused by faulty graphics drivers. Then there is this other issue where system becomes unresponsive because of high hard drive activity. So far the blame is on Microsoft and we all know about that indexing. I usually put the blame on whoever owns the piece of software or hardware that ultimately controls the behavior. During the Vista beta there were pretty much no drivers for Logitech devices and the existing drivers misbehaved all the time. Those annoyances stopped once Vista released and Logitech released fully tested drivers. Probably this is one of those cases. I like those companies that pro-actively test and release drivers for beta version of OS so that by the time OS is released, we have well tested drivers as well.

    I have the same problem with motherboard ASUS P5K. Sleep works, but when Windows 7 RC shuts down there is still noise coming from the cooling fans, and the computer power light is on. I had no problem in windows vista. In sleep mode all the fans are off, but if I move the mouse accidentally the computer come out of sleep. I tried last bios update, shutdown still not working.

    I have the same MB p5b-e with the latest BIOS.

    I run Win 7 RC 64bit – I’m able to do a sleep on the system but I cant get it to shutdown.

    Sleep is fast and super easy – but when I want to shut the PC down I have to press the power button (for 5 sec) to get the fans to stop.

    I find this a bit strange as the usual problem is the other way around – no sleep mode but shutdown works…

      Glad to hear that the sleep mode is working in RC. I don’t have RC yet, but in beta the computer won’t come out of sleep. How is the fan behaving in sleep mode?

    Didn’t quite understood your last post, James. Anyway, I updated from Win beta to Windows 7 RC, few days ago, and tried to shut down the PC for the first time, after installing. Somehow it shut down fine. On the next shutdowns, however, the problem reappeared again. Windows 7 shuts down, but there is still noise coming from the cooling fans, and the computer power light is on. So I need to hold the power button down for several seconds to shut it down completely. As you said that you are using latest Beta bios, and I use latest non-beta bios, it seems that upgrading Bios version is not helping. Anyway, probably it is some strange bug by the MS.

      Sorry Edgars, I posted a reply to your original comment and then deleted it. In the deleted comment I said my problem was fixed. I wasn’t talking about Windows 7 Beta shutdown.

      I haven’t got the RC yet. I probably should wait for public release on May 5th so that I can file bugs. I wasn’t able to do that with MSDN edition for some reason.

    One more thing – you mentioned that your BIOS version is 1802.

    I use the latest non-beta version, which is 1601, so you can rule out your beta BIOS.

      I replied to this saying it was fixed. I was thinking about another issue (fan noise) when you mentioned the BIOS. I still have the problem in Windows 7 even after multiple updates. 2-3 days ago there were about 11 updates. I still have to do restart and then when it restarts I press the power button to shutdown.

    Heh, thats why I found this forum – i have exactly the same problem and my motherboard is Asus P5BE as well. I don’t think this is a coincidence :D

    and there are no update driver for windows 7 in Asus site

      When I had a similar issue in Vista Beta with another ASUS motherboard, it went away by the time Vista got released. May be this will get resolved by the time they have RTM.
